A five-year roadmap connects security condition, business change, and platform dependencies to a sequence of decisions. It should be maintained as a planning document rather than treated as a fixed forecast of equipment purchases.

Part of Enterprise Security Budget and Lifecycle Planning.

Sequence decisions and dependencies

Establish the current estate, major support dates, operational gaps, anticipated sites, and approved standards. Group initiatives by dependency: discovery, urgent remediation, architecture readiness, pilot, rollout, and lifecycle maintenance. Identify the business owner and decision point for each initiative.

Allow for changes in sites and support

Acquisitions, site closures, new requirements, product support changes, and actual operating costs can alter the sequence. Record assumptions and uncertainty instead of presenting distant-year costs as precise commitments. Keep a provision for reviewing unsupported or failed components without losing the wider architecture plan.

Review progress and adjust priorities

Review the roadmap against completed work, updated condition findings, support evidence, and approved business plans. Confirm that near-term projects support the target operating model. Explain changed priorities and retain the decision record so budget owners can see why work moved between years.
