Define the Loads and Required Behavior

Identify the equipment the stored-energy system will support, its power demand, and the required operating duration. Include the supporting communications and network equipment needed for the intended function to remain available.

Document what should happen when normal power fails, during any transition to another source, and when normal power returns. Confirm the applicable requirements with the project’s designers and reviewing authority before selecting equipment.

Confirm Whether NFPA 111 Applies

The NFPA 111 publication addresses system performance, installation, operation, maintenance, and testing.

The adopted edition, system classification, supported loads, and project conditions determine the requirements that apply.

A product described as a UPS or battery backup is not, by that description alone, proof that it meets a project’s required alternate-power arrangement. Review equipment suitability, installation requirements, and the standards governing the supported systems together.

Coordinate the Complete Power Path

Review the stored-energy equipment, transfer arrangement, distribution path, environment, and supported devices as one system. Account for access for service and the conditions specified by the equipment manufacturer.

Plan Verification and Maintenance

Define how the installed system will be tested and how the results will be recorded. Testing should demonstrate the required behavior of the supported functions under the conditions specified for the project.

Keep equipment information, load records, test results, service history, and unresolved deficiencies current. Reassess capacity and operating expectations when connected equipment changes or the backup system is replaced.

Review Security and Life-Safety Interfaces

Backup power planning must account for the required behavior of the systems it supports. For example, access-control continuity must remain coordinated with applicable egress requirements, while fire alarm power arrangements need their own system-specific review.

Assign responsibility for those interfaces so electrical, security, and life-safety work can be coordinated before installation and verified afterward.
