Review the Complete Rated Opening

A fire-rated opening includes more than the door leaf. Review the frame, hardware, labels, glazing where present, and the condition of the assembly together before proposing a security upgrade.

Record the opening’s identification and existing hardware, then confirm the applicable requirements with the project’s reviewing authority and qualified door professionals. The adopted edition, product listings, manufacturer instructions, and field conditions guide the work.

Plan Hardware Changes Before Installation

Card access, electrified locks, monitored hardware, closers, and replacement latches can affect how an opening operates. Review compatibility and the permitted modification process before drilling, cutting, or replacing components.

Where a proposed modification needs manufacturer or listing-agency review, obtain the appropriate direction before proceeding. Keep the resulting authorization and equipment information with the opening’s records.

Coordinate Fire Protection and Egress

A security objective does not remove the need for the rated opening to perform its fire-protection function. Changes must also account for the applicable occupant-release and egress requirements.

Identify any interfaces with access control or fire alarm systems during planning so the responsible parties can coordinate the intended behavior and verification. Detailed egress and fire alarm guidance is available in the related guides below.

Maintain Inspection and Testing Records

Use a documented inspection and testing program appropriate to the opening and applicable requirements. Record the opening checked, date, results, deficiencies, corrective work, and follow-up.

NFPA’s swinging fire-door inspection checklist provides a reference for review; the applicable standard and qualified inspection determine the project’s requirements.

Resolve Deficiencies and Preserve the Record

Track damage, missing identification, hardware problems, and unverified modifications through correction and retesting. Update records after changes so future service teams can distinguish the approved installed condition from an unresolved issue.

Consult the NFPA 80 publication and the edition applicable to the project for the governing technical requirements.
