When a controlled door needs a retrofit

A reader can accept a credential while the door still fails to secure. For example, a worn strike may not latch. A weak closer may also leave the door open. In addition, a damaged contact can report the wrong door state.

NERSA checks the complete opening before recommending parts. First, we review the door, frame, hinges, closer, latch, and exit device. Next, we test the reader, lock, contact, request-to-exit device, power, and wiring. This process identifies the actual fault and avoids unnecessary replacement.

What the assessment covers

  • Door alignment, latching, and closer operation.
  • Electric strikes, magnetic locks, or electrified trim.
  • Readers, keypads, credentials, and controller communication.
  • Door contacts, request-to-exit devices, and forced-door alerts.
  • Power supplies, cable condition, labeling, and network paths.

Existing components can remain when they work reliably and support the final design. However, damaged or unsupported equipment should not stay simply to reduce the initial scope. The recommendation explains what can remain, what needs repair, and what requires replacement.

Safe operation comes first

Access control must not block emergency egress.

Therefore, the retrofit also reviews release methods, exit hardware, and fire-alarm interfaces.

For reference, see OSHA’s workplace exit-route requirements.

Final work must also follow applicable codes and the authority having jurisdiction.

For system-wide planning, review commercial access control in Easton.

For controllers, software, and credential migration, review Easton access-control upgrades.

Verify the Opening After the Retrofit

Test the complete opening with the designated operator after the work. Check approved entry, denied entry, normal closing and relatching, and the expected door event in the system. Also review the agreed behavior during loss of power or communication with the project team. Record hardware models, adjustments, outstanding issues, and the contact for follow-up service.

Request a door retrofit assessment

NERSA can inspect the opening, document the problem, and recommend a practical Easton door hardware retrofit.

Compliance, Codes & Project Standards

NERSA plans commercial and industrial security work with applicable code, documentation, inspection and authority-having-jurisdiction requirements in mind. Requirements vary by system, property and jurisdiction. These resources support project planning; they do not establish legal compliance, certification or AHJ approval.
