Define the industrial system boundary
Document the security function, required information exchange, responsible system owners, approved communication paths, and operational constraints. Identify whether the intended integration is observation, event exchange, or control. Use the plant’s approved engineering and cybersecurity review process for any connection affecting operational systems.
Respect production and maintenance constraints
Production schedules, vendor support constraints, legacy devices, and limited maintenance windows can complicate changes. Record which systems must remain isolated and how temporary support is approved. Avoid treating spare network capacity as permission to connect a new device or route.
Validate interfaces with responsible teams
Validate the approved interfaces and failure behavior in coordination with the responsible teams. Test the security requirement without assuming authority to interrupt production. Retain diagrams, approvals, support boundaries, and recovery instructions so later security changes do not bypass plant change control.
