Access-control continuity planning specifies which functions must remain available when a server, network connection, power source, or hosted service is interrupted. Evaluate the complete path from credential presentation to door behavior.

Part of Enterprise Access Control Systems.

Map local and central dependencies

List what must work at each site and at the central office. Include access decisions, door schedules, stored events, user enrollment, remote changes, and account management. For each function, identify the controller, server, connection, and power source it needs. Confirm supported redundancy and offline behavior for the exact configuration rather than assuming all functions fail over together.

Plan for controller, power, and service outages

Consider interrupted updates, failed controllers, exhausted backup power, unavailable central administration, and recovery after extended disconnection. Door hardware and life-safety behavior must be reviewed by the qualified project team. Document temporary procedures and the personnel authorized to implement them.

Verify door behavior and recovery

Test agreed outage scenarios under controlled conditions. Record which credentials and schedules still worked, which events the system kept, and which functions stopped. Then check how the systems share updates after service returns. Verify alerts, recovery order, and any manual steps. Use those results to set realistic operating expectations and support priorities.
