Configuration backups should support a defined recovery task. A copied file is useful only when authorized staff can locate it, understand its scope, and restore the supported configuration.

Define backup scope and ownership
Identify what must be recoverable for each platform: device settings, server configuration, controller databases, integration mappings, license information, and relevant documentation. Confirm manufacturer-supported export and restore procedures. Assign backup ownership, access controls, version labeling, storage location, and review frequency.
Plan for incompatible or incomplete backups
Account for encrypted exports, lost recovery information, version incompatibility, replaced hardware, incomplete backups, and dependencies stored outside the application. Configuration backup and recorded-video retention are different requirements. Avoid placing sensitive recovery material in ordinary shared documents or public project records.
Prove the restore procedure
Perform an approved restore exercise in a suitable test or controlled environment. Verify the required functions and dependencies rather than only checking that a file imports. Record versions, steps, limitations, and recovery time observed. Recheck after significant system changes and keep the latest verified recovery procedure accessible to authorized personnel.

Compliance, Codes & Project Standards
NERSA plans commercial and industrial security work with applicable code, documentation, inspection and authority-having-jurisdiction requirements in mind. Requirements vary by system, property and jurisdiction. These resources support project planning; they do not establish legal compliance, certification or AHJ approval.
